Current Projects
In March 2009, Tree Pals staff traveled to Honduras and Nicaragua to establish contact with area schools and community groups to assess interest in the program and begin plans for implementing the program this year.
The response was overwhelmingly in favor of our program and resulted in the formation of over 30 partner schools between both countries. With help from our Trees for the Future in-country technicians, every school will have environmental ed in the classroom as well as a nursery and tree planting project.
To reach as many schools as possible, Tree Pals has partnered with several organizations already hard at work educating subsistence farmers in the region on sustainable agriculture practices. Aldea Global is one such partner that works in schools rural communities, and has agreed to implement Tree Pals curriculum and planting projects in 10 schools in 3 communities.
In Leon, Nicaragua, we have partnered with Peace Corps volunteers teaching science in and will provide them with enough seeds for nursery projects in 10 schools.
In Masatepe, Nicaragua, our Trees for the Future technician is overseeing classroom education and planting projects in 5 area schools. Each school has its own model for planting depending on the specific conditions and needs of the area, but they are all using several of the same species, among them Moringa oleifera, Grevillea robusta and Gliricidia sepium. These trees are fast-growing, hearty species that can survive in arid climates and replenish soil quality, remove CO2 from the atmosphere and prevent natural disasters such as mudslides.
